Potential Meeting Sites

Notes about good/bad sites for CCA Forum meetings
print PDF
The CCA Forum has held meetings in many different locations. Moreover, Forum members frequently attend other meetings. This page is intended to collect notes about sites that might be worth considering (or should be excluded) for future meetings.

The notes here may be rather subjective, so please respect other people's opinions by adding your own comments rather than changing others.

  • Washington DC area
    • Hilton Silver Spring
      • Experience: David Bernholdt, CCA Forum, 2007-07
      • Hotel facilities and service: adequate, but just barely. Musty
      • Networking: $10/day wired in room, $250/day wired in meeting room
      • Transportation: 4 blocks from Silver Spring Metro
      • Area: many walkable restaurants, many fast & close for lunch
    • Marriott North Bethesda
      • Experience: David Bernholdt, BER/ESnet workshop, 2007-07 arranged by Yeen Mankin, LBNL
      • Hotel facilities: Nice, offers packages (priced per person per day)
      • Networking $4/day wired in room
      • Transportation: 1 block from White Flint Metro
      • Area: limited restaurant choices
      • Feb 2009: they refused to provide a price quote broken out in the way that ORNL Conference Office requires. Apparently they will only quote the package.
    • Hyatt Bethesda
      • Experience: David Bernholdt, GNEP workshop, 2006-08
      • Hotel facilities: ample
      • Transportation: on top of Bethesda Metro
      • Area: many walkable restaurants, workable for lunch with a little extra time
    • Hilton Rockville
      • Experience: David Bernholdt, FASTOS PI meeting, 2005-06, SciDAC reviews 2009-04
      • Hotel facilities: adequate
      • Transportation: Across the street from Twinbrook Metro
      • Area: A sea of strip malls. Adequate for lunches with a little extra time, reasonable places for dinner for a few nights.
    • Legacy Hotel, Rockville, MD
      • Across Rockville Pike from the Rockville Hilton
      • Experience: CCA Forum 2009-04
      • Hotel facilities: rooms are nice, free internet, not a huge number of meeting rooms (might book up quickly), but nice. Catering better than expected.
      • Transportation: Two blocks from Twinbrook Metro
      • Area: A sea of strip malls. Adequate for lunches with a little extra time, reasonable places for dinner for a few nights.
    • Washington Court Hotel, DC
      • Experience: Tom Epperly, Lois McInnes, and Steve Parker, annual DOE CSGF meeting
      • Hotel facilities: good for large meetings (not sure for smaller ones)
      • Transportation: 2-3 blocks from Union Station Metro
      • Area: A few blocks from Capitol Building, food court at Union Station
    • Omni Shoreham, DC
      • Experience: David Bernholdt, CESC 2007-04
      • Hotel facilities: a sprawling and obviously once-grand hotel. Okay for large meetings, not sure about facilities for smaller meeting
      • Transportation: 2-3 blocks from Woodley Park Metro
      • Area: A small selection of nice restaurants near Metro. In/near Adams-Morgan?, which is supposed to be good for food.
    • American Geophysical Union
      • Experience: Deborah Garland, ORISE (used for peer review panels & other events they organize for DOE)
      • Transportation: Near Dupont Circle Metro stop
      • 3-4 meeting room available for rent. Contact: Michelle Brown @ AGU
      • Must arrange for outside catering
      • Deborah recommends not using AGU's AV equipment (low quality).
